Taslima Begum from the Oaklands Weightlifters club in Bethnal Green was hoping for success in the -48kg category. Taslima had encountered a number of barriers prior to the event, with an unfortunate spell of illness on the build up to the competition amongst other things. Nevertheless, she was determined to leave the competition triumphant.
Taslima had an unfortunate start in the snatch at 45kg, standing up with her first snatch attempt, but sadly dropping it behind her meant her first attempt was not registered. Thankfullly, her second go was far stronger, again at 45kg, while her final attempt at 50kg matched her personal best.
Clean and Jerk was next up and Taslima opened at 56kg. Her next attempt was for 62kg, where she again again a successful lift and her personal best. The final attempt, 64kg, was well executed and successful and set yet another personal record.
Taslima finished with a total of 114kg, putting her in 1st place and awarding her the best in the region in her respected category. This has also made her eligible for the Youth Development Squad, potentially confirming her as talent in the eyes of the NGB.
“I was immensely proud of Taslima’s performance. She has trained hard for this event, and although we had a few barriers on the build up, she was still triumphant. We had a goal for a total of 114kg and we attained it. There is definitely more in her as well. We will be looking to improve on this performance after a well deserved rest. We hope the NGB recognise Taslima’s real potential.”
Taslima will be training hard up until her next scheduled competition in the new year. Watch this space to hear what further success this talented young lady attains.
