British Weight Lifting showcased the pinnacle of school talent this weekend at the British Schools Championships. Oldbury Academy was the host of this years event, a well equipped venue with a strong history in weightlifting.

Tower Hamlets produced three lifters ready to take on the best in the country, all from Oaklands School; Jamie Andrews, Taslima Begum and Aminul Thanjir (L-R with THYSF Weightlifting Coach, Rich Kite – Far left).

Jamie kick-started the day in the year 10 -56kg boys category. Jamie went 6 for 6 lifts, achieving best lifts of 40kg in the snatch and 55kg in the clean & jerk, giving him a total of 95kg. This placed him in 4th place, narrowly missing 3rd position by 1 point.

Aminul was next up in the year 11 -63kg boys category. Aminul got 5 out of 6 lifts and secured a strong total resulting in 4th place. He snatched 43kg and clean & jerked 52kg for a total of 95kg.

Taslima closed the competition for us. Competing in the year 11 -48kg girls category, she went 6 for 6 lifts achieving a snatch of 34kg and clean & jerk of 48kg, giving her a total of 82kg. This led her to victory claiming the top spot and the title of British Schools Champion in her category.

A huge well done is deserved to all the lifters at the event, but especially our three tower hamlets lifters, as it was there first major event. Whilst confronted with nerves and the unknown, they all overcame such hurdles and achieved success.

Looking ahead, we are looking strong for the London Youth Games which looks to be the next big competition for these guys.
